Dean’s musical career started at an early age as he pursued the viola and alto sax. He performed in the school orchestra and band. He started piano lessons during his high school years. Dean was heavily influenced singing hymns in his church choir and the sounds of the organ inspired him.
His country and rockabilly influences came from listening to the radio with his parents. Here he heard the music of Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Elvis, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Fats Domino and many of the legends from the 50’s and 60’s. These memories are still fresh in Dean’s mind.
During his teen years, Dean started exploring the music of the 70’s which included The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix and the Eagles.
Consumed by the music, Dean began diligently searching for his nitch in the music world. At this time he also began studying the blues.
While in college, Dean picked up the electric bass and started playing original music with a keyboardist and songwriter. In 1994 after college, Dean formed a band, Dino and the Grinders which played the club circuit in the Northern Virginia region.
In 1996 at the age of 25, Dean toured the Mid-Atlantic with Daryl Davis, leader of the Daryl Davis Band and former keyboardist for Chuck Berry. While touring with The Daryl Davis Band, Dean played with other artists such as Johnnie Johnson, Bill Kirtchen, Ron Holloway and other top artists in the Washington DC Metropolitan market.
In 1999, Dean joined the Southern Persuasion band touring the Mid-Atlantic market. In 2000, Southern Persuasion recorded a CD titled, “Find A Way” for local release, where he wrote, arranged and recorded all the bass tracks.
In 2002, Dean joined “Acoustic Company”, a contemporary bluegrass band. In 2003, "Acoustic Company" recorded a self titled CD for local release, featuring Larry Keel on guitar and mandolin, where Dean penned a track for the CD and wrote, arranged and recorded all the bass tracks.
In 2005, still not finding the right path in music, Dean became a full time Real Estate Title Insurance Agent. He never let go of his music drive and kept his skills honed playing with friends from the Jaycee’s, which he was a member.
Dean returned to the music business in 2017 and was immediately hired by Mississippi Tom Robbins to co-host a local Blues Jam with him. Keeping his music ambitions alive, Dean currently works with Daryl Davis, Mark Wenner (The Nighthawks), Mark Stutso (The Nighthawks), Paul Bell (formerly of The Nighthawks and Nils Lofgren), Vince Henry (Tom Waits, Hugh Laurie), Paul Johnson (Waxing Poetics and The Master Plan) and Linwood Taylor (Joe Louis Walker). Dean is known as a “play in the pocket” bassist.
